Although both these things are unrelated, I encountered both in one night here in Grenada...... It seems I have officially become a miniature Betty Crocker.... I decided last night to attempt to bake a homemade apple pie, and that means no cheating whatsoever. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this you should know that this includes making your pie crust and dough from scratch as well as the apple mixture in the middle. Definitely not easy, and is something that should only be attempted when you have A LOT of time on your hands like I happen to have. I went the whole nine yards. Kamron went with me to our 'supermarket' here (if thats what you want to call it) where we purchased all the ingredients plus a pie pan and a rolling pin. Two years ago who would have imagined such a scene? I didnt really know the true meaning or have the proper respect for what it meant to cook back then, hell we ate more fast food than anything. And so here I am two years later buying baking ingredients and rolling pins to make homemade pies. I must admit that I am really proud of myself. It seems that if I can make apple pie from scratch, I can cook anything, maybe even someday rule the world (just kidding).
After the successful operation of making and baking the apple pie I was looking forward to bedtime and having a pleasant, peaceful sleep. Thats where the thunderstorms come in.... Here in Grenada you never know when it is going to rain (or downpour), how long it will last, or if it will be sunny again within the next couple of hours. So when the lightening first started at around 2 am I thought nothing of it and proceeded to get ready for bed. That is until I realized this may be the worst thunderstorm I have ever encountered. Needless to say I ended up laying awake until around 4:30 because the thunder was so loud you could here it vibrating the entire building and all the windows. At one point I was sure that one of the windows was going to break from the force of the sound. Sometimes it is so amazing how powerful nature can be, and under ordinary circumstances (like when Im not trying to sleep for instance) I would have been excited and fascinated by the spectacle. But this storm failed to impress me due to the fact that I was waiting in anticipation for the storm to pass, (in fact I was counting the minutes), so I could finally get some well-deserved sleep.
Stay tuned for more interesting and bizzare stories about what its like living here in Grenada!
